The Museum of History, Science and Technology continues the exhibition "Tintype. Canned time. American snapshot photography of the 19th century". On the Evening of the Opening Day, the museum will open a new section of the exhibition dedicated to Chinese tintypes in the nude genre (18+).
A collection of nude tintypes was hidden in the luxurious rural house of a Chinese nobleman. The history and purpose of tintypes are unknown. It could be a catalog of a brothel, or photographs of harem concubines, or the result of a secret hobby of the owner of the manor. Judging by the technique, the plates were made in the last quarter of the 19th century. It is possible that the master who made them was a European, or at least was well acquainted with European aesthetics. However, the tintypes are painted in a completely different way than was customary in the West: the author turned them almost into color photographs.
There are about 300 portraits in the original collection, of which 60 are presented at the exhibition in digital form.
