Public talk with art historian Andrei Sarabyanov
A public talk with art historian and researcher of the Russian avant‑garde Andrei Sarabyanov will take place on September 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art.
The main topic of the public talk will be the relevance of the avant‑garde and its influence on modern culture and art as a whole. The event is timed to coincide with the release of the series “Amazonas of the Russian Avant‑Garde,” a documentary project by the online cinema START.
Andrei Sarabyanov, an art historian, researcher of the Russian avant‑garde, author‑compiler and scientific editor of the “Encyclopedia of the Russian Avant‑Garde,” served as the artistic director of the project:
“They began to be called ‘Amazonians’ only in the early 1930s — after Benedikt Livshits compared them to the legendary warrior women in his memoirs. But, in my opinion, this metaphor is not entirely accurate: in life, they were quiet, modest, and very gentle women.” At the same time, their fates cannot be separated from their art and the complex historical era in which they lived and created. They served the new art without thinking about material things. Their avant‑garde is the creation of new worlds. They changed the course of not only Russian but also world art.
The public talk will be moderated by Vadim Zelensky — Candidate of Economic Sciences, graduate of Skolkovo Executive MBA, speaker on educational programs at several business schools, author of the course “Great Visionaries” about success, legacy, and the Russian cultural code (based on the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery).
“The Amazons of the Russian Avant‑Garde” is a four‑part documentary project about four outstanding artists: Natalia Goncharova, Lyubov Popova, Olga Rozanova, and Nadezhda Udaltsova, who created paintings in the avant‑garde genre and transformed Russian art of the 20th century. Each episode is dedicated to one artist. The documentary is based on letters, archival documents, photographs, recollections of contemporaries, and other historical sources. The documentary project “The Amazons of the Russian Avant‑Garde” has already been presented to a professional audience as part of a festival tour. In August, “Amazons of the Russian Avant‑Garde” entered the competition program of the Original+ Doc festival and received special awards from the jury; the project was also presented at the international Onirica Film Festival and Apulia Web Fest.
The project was created by the production agency BOKOVFACTORY and the online cinema START, with the support of the Internet Development Institute (ANO “IRI”). The partner of the project was the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art.
