The exposition of the MTS Live exhibition project is located in the historical dungeons of the CCA Winzavod — under the arches of a Large Wine Storage. Moving between the exhibition halls, the viewer will immerse himself in the world of Russian fairy tales, discovering new facets of familiar stories and characters. The new exhibition goes beyond the usual format and turns into an exploration of the Russian fairy tale as a cultural code and a source of collective imagination.
The project presents classic Russian fairy tales in a new interpretation — the current genre of total installation, combining the works of contemporary artists and iconic illustrators.
The exhibition opens with a hall where the audience is greeted by the images of A. S. Pushkin, A. N. Afanasyev, V. I. Dahl and V. Ya. Propp — collectors and researchers of Russian fairy tales. This zone sets the tone for the updated "mature" exposition. Next, the audience will see "wow" art objects and a journey through fantastic spaces: a giant bogatyr's head, a tall Baba Yaga in the Bilibin style, her hut, the winter kingdom and the updated "Mushroom War" with Tsar Pea.
There is a stable with a Humpbacked Horse, a forge with a Tula anvil and fabulous animals. A special place is occupied by the expanded hall of Soviet fairy tales, which recreates the atmosphere of the Soviet interior with iconic movie images, artifacts and illustrations, including, for example, the Soviet version of "The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish" and "The Frog Princess." For fans of the "golden era" of Russian cinema and animation, this space will be a celebration of nostalgia.
The project immerses the viewer in a magical world and reveals the mechanisms of a fairy tale — its archetypes, symbolism and inner meanings. From the architecture of the route to the visual images and narrative, all the elements of the exhibition have been rethought.
"While working on the exhibition, we explored the permanent elements of the Russian fairy tale — the plot outline, archetypal characters, and ways of embodying magic. It is important for us to show how these constants have changed over time, from folk tales to Soviet interpretations and modern mythology," said Polina Kotova, curator of the project.
"There is magic in this project. Here you can spend time with your child, traveling through the world of Russian fairy tales. Stories familiar to us since childhood are presented in a completely new interpretation. How did these stories come about? What are they telling us? This exhibition is unique in that our children will get to know Russian fairy tales through immersive interaction, and adults, with a wealth of life experience, will discover the original ideas of the authors and rediscover familiar plots. We are sure that we will turn your idea of fairy tales upside down and immerse you in a fairy tale," Ilya Dybov, producer of the project.
The immersive spaces of the exhibition are designed so that the viewer goes through trials like a hero of a fairy tale: he wanders through a dark forest, meets wonderful creatures and returns to the bright expanse. It is not only a spectacle, but also an experience of personal transformation. The organizers of the project, focusing on the feedback from the audience, made the exhibition more understandable, full of explanations and symbols, while preserving the magic of the first season.
The project involves contemporary Russian artists such as Danya Pirogov, Elena Kovylina, Artur Krivoshein, Alexey Vasiliev, Alexander Vinogradov and Vladimir Dubosarsky, Alexander Krylov and others. Their works combine folk motifs with contemporary art, giving the tale a modern sound.
The exhibition features documentary and game videos, art installations, including immersive and light, art objects and other artifacts created and selected specifically for the project by the Triumph Gallery of Contemporary Art.
Guests will be able to explore the exhibition on their own or with the help of an audio guide, which will tell you more about the thematic areas and exhibits.
The exhibition is open until January 31, 2026.
