Nikolay Onishchenko
In the icy ether

FUTURO Gallery presents Nikolay Onishchenko's solo exhibition "In the icy Ether". The exhibition features a series of monochrome graphic works on paper and an audio installation.

The idea of the project is based on the graphic embodiment of a rhythmic sound device, where there is always a base that acquires less noticeable details.

"Electronic music seems to be the furthest thing fr om everything alive and natural. The sound wave created by means of mathematics and physics when turning the synthesizer knob is as artificial and abstract as possible. The synthetic sound, built on repetitions, rhythmic and sound patterns, is similar to how we perform elementary actions every day without noticing or thinking — hand movements, muscle contractions, breathing," the artist comments.

Remaining in the practice of minimal expressive means, Nikolay Onishchenko compares the sound device with the principle of glacier formation and creates a series of graphics depicting sharp, fragile and nature-like objects.

"Ice, like other natural phenomena — the crackle of fire, the noise of branches, remaining inconspicuous, but with incredible natural persistence, expands its boundaries, creating chronicles of its own existence, continuing its quiet, continuous expansion.

Under its own weight, the optical axes of the ice, initially oriented chaotically, align for a certain moment, and the ice slowly moves, overgrowing with details and mass." Synthesizer sounds are often called "icy" — as cold, transparent and at the same time unshakable. The artist rethinks the gallery space, focusing on emptiness and turning it into a place wh ere sound is broadcast.

The installation sets a situation completely independent of the viewer, he just has to enter the space of the ether and catch a fragment.

About the artist:
