Vladimir Shinkarev
Rome in winter

Gallery pop/off/art presents personal exhibition «Rome in winter» by Vladimir Shinkarev - famous Petersburg artist and one of the creators of the group «Mitki». Pictorial series, which currently includes more than forty works, was started in 2009 during the long-term internship in Italy. This opportunity was given to the artist by the scholarship of the memory fund Joseph Brodsky, who continued the academic tradition of awarding the best masters.

Shinkaryov’s artistic method - to highlight the main and form a concise statement, causes a long interest in the topic. He returns to Roman motifs for a long time, creating new pictorial variations of his compositions. Shinkaryov leads us around the city, offering a look both in non-trivial nooks with unexpected angles, and in more popular places with views of the Tiber and Forum. Choosing the most monochrome season of the year, he level the difference between Rome and Saint Petersburg, viewing the Eternal City through the prism of the color of the northern capital. The exhibition will feature new works done in the past few years, together with earlier ones, which will allow the viewer not only to experience the atmosphere of the city, but also to follow the artistic process.

The views of Rome will be supplemented by several paintings from the famous series of the artist «World Cinema». Shots of masterpieces by Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni captured Shinkaryov with special trepidation to the composition and aesthetics of the director. Heroes of films become the only guides on this journey. Their life dramas unfold quietly against the backdrop of Roman landscapes that we see from the screen of the picture.

Vladimir Shinkaryov was born in 1954 in Leningrad. From 1974 to 1977, he studied at the LVCP. Mukhina and Repin Institute. Since 1975 he has participated in unofficial apartment exhibitions. Vladimir Shinkarev’s book «Mitka» in 1984 marked the beginning of the eponymous movement. He was a founding member of the group and left in 2008. He is also known as a writer and author of a number of books, including the cult status «Maxim and Fedor» (1978-80). In 2008, Shinkarev won the Joseph Brodsky Prize. The works are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, Hermitage, Russian Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum (London, Great Britain). He lives and works in Saint Petersburg.
