Blue soup
Failure

XL Gallery presents the exhibition of the Blue Soup group "Failures". The project is dedicated to species exploration as a method of recognizing hidden layers of reality through remote observation.

The works of "Blue Soup" are characterized by a feeling of anxiety – sometimes mysterious and unclear, sometimes intense, like a premonition of impending disaster. Landscapes and interiors created by artists using digital animation are similar to the real ones, but not completely: they have an eye-catching detachment and artificiality that involuntarily makes the viewer wary. There is something similar to the concept of the "sinister valley" – a sense of the frightening otherness of humanoid robots and anthropomorphic images created with the help of digital technologies and artificial intelligence. But there are no characters in the group's works: each of them is dedicated to locations where some mysterious forces operate.

Who or what lurks in the shadow of the folds of unfamiliar landscapes? What data can be collected by analyzing the visual characteristics of landscapes and their structural anomalies, recorded from the height of drones, satellites and probes? Who or what left the holes, cracks and sinkholes — time or someone's presence?

One of the tenets of the Blue Soup group's manifesto is "BlueSoup Video doesn't tell stories." And yet, it seems that these stories add up by themselves while watching the video - or at least become the starting point of these stories, unique to each viewer.

The Blue Soup group was established in 1996. The group currently consists of Alexey Dobrov, Daniil Lebedev and Alexander Lobanov. In 2007, the group won the Innovation Award (the Lake project). Group exhibitions held in the gallery XL ("Echelon" (2023); "Gad" (2019); "Cascade" (2016); "Murk" (2014); "the Snowstorm" (2009); and "defense"(2008); "the Lake" (2007), the cultural Foundation "Ekaterina" ("XXI"), the Museum of modern art "Garage" (the display of works in the framework of the "open storage" (2025); participation in the 1st triennial of Russian contemporary art (2017) etc.
