Roman Sakin
Nofo

XL Gallery presents Roman Sakin's exhibition "Nofo". In his new project, the artist presents his own method of "nophography," a unique approach to capturing the world through observation and the creation of nophographic images.

Roman Sakin's focus is always on everyday reality, its mechanisms and characteristics, as well as the exploration of the world through artistic practices. Thus, the Kuraspathia project (XL Gallery, 2020) was a set of techniques from a philosophical and therapeutic system based on a specific theory of space and its perception, while the Beauty in Space project (XL Gallery, 2024-2025) explored the rules and traditions of contemporary art that are not explicitly stated but have become established in the artistic sphere and have an imperative form.

In his project "Nofo", Sakin presents a unique device of the same name – "Nofo", or a new camera designed to produce Nophographic images. These images themselves, created with the participation of one or a group of observers, are similar to the testimonies of presence that were given to the viewers of "Appearance", the first action of the Collective Actions group. By participating in the creation of a Nophographic image through observation and filling out a special form, witnesses are automatically included in the author's artistic project.

As Sakin says, the emergence of artificial intelligence and perfect photo processing has led to a crisis in photography as a technology for truthfully depicting reality. This has resulted in the creation of a special tool that works on the principle of agreement among all participants about what they see and how they interpret what they see.

Roman Sakin is a graduate of the Abramtsevo Art and Industrial College named after V. M. Vasnetsov and the Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Art and Industry. Nominee for the Kandinsky Prize (2009, project "U.S."; 2012, project "Master of the 3rd Grade"). The artist's solo exhibitions have been held at the XL Gallery ("Beauty in Space", 2024-2025, "Kuraspatia", 2020; "The Point of Rotation is Me", 2018), the Octava Creative Industrial Cluster ("Athens School", 2024), the Moscow Museum of Modern Art ("The Forest", 2008), the Pereletny Kabak Gallery ("Our Time", 2018), and others.
