GIRLS!GIRLS!GIRLS!
Who run the world? GIRLS!
VLADEY presents the exhibition GIRLS!GIRLS!GIRLS!, dedicated to the art of Russian contemporary female artists. The exposition includes works made in various mediums and answering the question: “What do female artists talk about in their art today?”.
The curatorial selection was guided by the discussions raging in the intellectual field about the constant and abrupt transformations of the role of women in the public, political and cultural spheres. Simone de Beauvoir raised this question back in the middle of the 20th century, emphasizing that for many centuries women were prescribed conflicting requirements that had to be combined within the same social status. One example of such a situation is described by the term "second shift" coined by the researcher Arly Hochschild. Women, having received the legal and de facto right to work, cannot partially or completely abandon household duties, as a result of which they are forced to be both “workers” and “guardians of the hearth” at the same time. The same system is preserved within the art world. A number of critics believe that the art of contemporary artists is centered around the transformation of decorative and applied techniques. Others believe that any work created by a woman is a priori a feminist manifesto. Still others speak of the need to work with large, traditionally “male” formats (stone sculpture, large-scale painting) as a form of protest.
Exhibition GIRLS!GIRLS!GIRLS! raises the issue of the need to be "controversially different" in the social and professional environment. There are no thematic blocks and no categorization of works in the exposition, and the visual narrative is not connected with the context of the work – only the personal statements of the project participants remain the main thing. Turning directly to the works and quotes of the artists, the viewer is invited to find out what is really important in art for each of them.
The works presented at the exhibition will be available for purchase at the VLADEY GIRLS!GIRLS!GIRLS! auction, which will be held on October 22 at 15:00. Participation can be done online and by phone.
