Childhood is usually perceived as a phase of growing up, a certain preparatory period before an every person’s meaningful life. What if we imagine adults not as conscious individuals who have grown out of their maximalistic "wishlist" and endless games, but as girls and boys who only have slightly changed visually? Peter Bruegel the Elder's painting "Children's Games" comes to mind at once, where the characters look more like small adults than village children.
At her first personal exhibition, Sonya Kobozeva "blurs the border" between age periods, sharing with us her everyday observations. Her characters live by themselves, immersed into the world of their own thoughts. They do not interact much even with each other, preferring to look at the phone or throw themselves into the «work». They are separated even more when the artist places them on single canvases, simultaneously limiting with the artificial frames, but at the same time giving private freedom and the opportunity to feel as natural as possible. The colour scheme is also extremely concise and only boosts the impression of isolation.
Unnecessary details disappear, "exposing" all the same children and teenagers who are enclosed in the bodies of adults. They still continue to play games when they are alone, resembling awkward figures from Bruegel’s painting, but in the realities of the modern world.
