The course will be held from November 14 till January 30.

The main purpose of the new course "Ancient mythology in art" is to acquaint students with the main subjects and meanings of ancient mythology, which strongly influenced the world culture from ancient times to the present day, be it painting, literature, opera or theatre. The world born from Chaos, the world created by legendary gods and people gifted with superpowers, their twists and turns, is the subject of interest of the new author's program.

The course includes 8 group lessons of 3 hours each, including 7 lectures and 1 field lesson - in the halls of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. Classes are held once a week on Thursdays from 11.00 to 14.00. At the end of the course a certificate is issued. The cost of the course - 34 000 rubles. With materials 39 000 rubles.

Program

Lecture 1: What are Greek myths? Acquaintance with sources. Greek and Roman authors. Homer and Hesiod, Ovidius and Virgil and others.

Lecture 2: Religious representations of the ancient Greeks. Origin of the gods. Genealogical tree of Greek gods and goddesses.

Lecture 3: The first and second generation of gods, titans and titanids, the younger generation.

Lecture 4: Olympians. Plots related to the Olympic gods.

Lecture 5: Apollo and Dionysus. Two gods - two beginnings of European art.

Lecture 6: Antique epics. Brief description. The main characters.

Lecture 7: Theme of antiquity in European fine arts - what was the ancient world perceived by European artists.

Lecture 8: Final meeting at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. Acquaintance with works on mythological plots, "guessing".
